IN PRAISE OF OLDER WINE AND SAVOURING THE SPIRIT

The snow is starting to fly for many of us in Canada this month. It’s sobering, but your Fine Wine Department at Waddington’s has you covered. Our November auction is packed full of ready to drink vintage wines from all the major growing regions of the world and a stunning array of top producers. In fact, this auction features many more mature and ready to drink wines than often appear in our sales. For those of us who love older wine this is a real bonanza. The nuanced flavours of well aged wine, plum, bramble, earth and other savoury notes are impossible to reproduce and infinitely variable. It’s one of the many qualities that makes wine so endlessly appealing.

As usual, Bordeaux leads the way with many classed growth wines from the 1990’s and earlier. Bid on lots of 1954, 1965, 1973 and 1979 Mouton Rothschild. Super Tuscans from the late 80’s and 90’s abound. There is also an abundance of ready to drink California Cabernet Sauvignon including lots of Opus from 1981 and 1985. Expect to see plenty in the way of good red Burgundy with offerings from Armand Rousseau, Domaine Jean Grivot, Henri Perrot-Minot and Nicolas Potel.

If you really want something to savour on cold winter evenings, please thoroughly explore the sensational collections assembled by David McCarthy and John Boyd. These intrepid Ontario collectors have sleuthed the spirit world tracking down world-class whisky. Legendary producers and bottlings are the norm not the exception, including 30 year old Black Bowmore, 20 year old Brora and 27 year old Glen Scotia.

Similarly, our regular Fine Spirits auction once again offers collectors and those about to hibernate a panalopy of choice in terms of whiskys from Japan, Scotland, Canada and the United States, or rare cognac from France.

The auction goes live on November 25 at 9 am and concludes December 3.
