Note:

Painted circa 1906.

Remarking on landscapes by Beatty of the same period as this work, Farr describes “...a low horizon. Trees are silhouetted against the sky on one half..., one’s eye travels into the distance, to find a flickering band of horizontal light below a dark horizon.”.

Sheppard was a student of Beatty’s at the Ontario College of Art and a lifelong friend.
