Lot Report

Provenance:

William R. Watson, Montreal
Laing Galleries, Toronto
Private Collection, Toronto

Literature:

Donald W. Buchanan, The Growth of Canadian Painting, London and Toronto, 1950, plate 15 (between pages 32-33), reproduced.
Naomi Jackson Groves, A.Y.’s Canada, Toronto/Vancouver, 1968, pages 48 and 49, plate 24 for a related drawing entitled The Road to Bic.
William R. Watson, Recollections of a Montreal Art Dealer, Toronto, 1974, page 49.

Note:

Among the most distinguished artists whose work Watson showed at his gallery was A.Y. Jackson who, whenever he came to Montreal would always find time for a chat and sometimes would lunch together with Arthur Lismer. Watson writes that when Jackson came to Quebec, he did not stay long in Montreal: “...he was generally in a hurry to get to the country and especially so in winter. He loved the old Quebec villages... and made superb rhythms with them.”

Naomi Jackson Groves describes the outcrops of rock that form the characteristic razor-backed humps of nearly all the hills and islands along the South Shore of the St. Lawrence, reaching their climax at Bic with it’s beautiful bay and rich history.
