Lot 245
WALTER JOSEPH PHILLIPS, R.C.A.
Provenance:
Estate of Albert H. Robson, Toronto
By descent to the present owner
Note:
Executed in 1929 in an edition of 52 copies and issued only to Associate Members of the Society of Canadian Painters-Etchers.
In the publisher’s label accompanying this lot, the artist notes: “Eckington Bridge Spans Shakespeare’s ‘soft flowing Avon’ at the foot of Bredon Hill. It is very ancient, similar in design and built of the same kind of stone as another bridge a little lower down. The latter is at Tewkesbury, King John’s bridge built by that monarch, who decreed that all the town’s market fees should be used for its maintenance. Eckington bridge is close by the village of that name, which dates back more than a thousand years.”
