Lot 144
18th Century Flemish
Provenance:
Montreal Collection; Acquired by the present Private Collection in the mid 1970’s
Note:
The large scale of this work suggests it may have been part of a group of large scale canvases of varying sizes, executed in Holland and Flanders (and later Belgium) in the 18th Century to decorate the walls of a wealthy patron’s great houses (similar to wall paper), continuing the region’s tradition of being leaders in the world’s tapestry industry.
