Note:
King Louis I of Holland, also known as Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (b. 1778 - d. 1846), was appointed King of Holland in 1806 by his older brother, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte of France, with the intention that Louis would act as figurehead. When he did not cooperate with Napoleon's plans to enforce French Navigation laws on Dutch merchants, Napoleon dispatched French troops against the Dutch capital, at which point Louis abdicated the throne and fled to Austria. On July 9, 1810, Napoleon annexed Holland to France. To his subjects, King Louis I was remembered as both mentally unstable and erratic; however, he was also praised for his defense of the Dutch National interests against his brother Napoleon. Renaming himself the Compte de Saint-Leu, Louis Napoleon spent most of his later life in Italy where he occupied himself with literary pursuits.
