Provenance:
Private Collection, Calgary
Literature:
Daniel Drouin, et alia, Louis-Philippe Hébert, Musée du Québec et Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, 2001, pages 242-257 for "Iconographie Indienne de Hébert," page 254, and page 307, fig. 110 for this lot.
Note:
Hébert was interested depicting both pre-contact Indigenous life, as well as that of those exposed to European culture through, for example, trade. Of particular interest is the contrast between his depictions of male and female subjects. Drouin notes: "Si l'homme est souvent representé en chasseur ou en guerrier à l'affut, la femme emprunte les traits d'une séductrice ou d'une abandonnée, comme...Coeur qui Chante."
